I recently started in on painting my UNSC ships for Spartan’s Halo: Fleet Battles game. I’m reasonably pleased with the results I achieved, so I though a quick tutorial would be in order!
After a medium grey primer coat, I started picking out panels on the model with different shades of grey. I used three different colors for this; Light Green Blue-Grey (above), Pale Grey Blue, and Grey Blue (below). I tried to keep the highlighted spots random, yet balanced fore and aft, top to bottom.
Note that exact precision is not essential; the black wash will hide most small mistakes. Next up, I used some Boltgun to basecoat the parts I wanted to end up metallic.
After that, I applied a black wash to the whole model. The wash I used is from the Secret Weapon line, but I imagine any black wash will work fine!
Once the the wash had thoroughly dried, I began the drybrushing. First I used Codex Grey:
The second drybrush layer was done with white; this was a very light “frosting,” to add a final highlight to the model:
And there you have it! The final finishing touches include highlighting the metal bits, and doing the engine effects. However, the overall look is pretty much done.
Until next time…
