Title: Built a Naval Wargaming Table for Dystopian Wars
Post by: MajorMcNicol on September 30, 2012, 10:35:54 pm
Hey, so this is my first post.  I hope this is the right board to post under!

This weekend I built an ocean wargaming board.

I did it as two 2' x 4' sections and finished it this weekend in less than a day.

Construction video and pictures here:

I used the technique shown by RubbishInRubbishOut on youtube.

All in all, I think it turned out really nicely!  I look forward to the boards being 100% cured so I can move them around, put them side by side, try them out, etc.!

The glaze coat really ended up being a wonderful finishing touch.  The most important part of the project, however, was the second "highlight" of pale blue waves, which just brought the entire project together.

You got it close! I've moved it to the Q&A section as that is where I try to keep tutorials. Looks like a very nice table! I look forward to playing on it someday ;).

Thanks for moving the thread - and thanks for the table.  Look forward to that match up!

Hee hee, me too. I think it is interesting that you went with 2'x4' sections; I've made several space and naval game boards, and that was my solution as well. Just seems like a good size for reasonable portability.

Welcome aboard Ian.  That table looks simply outstanding.  I'm up in Northern Virginia, but maybe we'll cross swords sometime in Fredericksburg.  Would love to measure up my FSA against the Great Bear!

@ Landlubber - thank you!  I hope to make it up to Fredericksburg for the Oct. 28 event at the Game Vault.

@ Ruckdog - the portability was a big issue, for sure - for storage and for movement in my sedan.  But now that they are finally dry (glazecoat takes a long time!) I was thinking about turning them over and doing land boards on the other side.  Maybe doing a part sea - part land coastline board.  I am just not sure yet how to seal in some static grass across an entire table.

Might I suggest just covering the other side with one of these?

I've worked a little bit with one of these mats, and they are tough! You could probably just glue it down to the opposite side of the board and call it good.

A good suggestion!  I will look into it - thanks.  I'll be sure to post any progress or work on it here!
