General Discussion / Looking for WW2 naval history book recomendations

Hi,

I've just finished reading Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany and the winning of the great war at sea by Robert K Massie and really enjoyed it

and now I'm looking for recommendations for something similar but for WW2, ether for the whole war or a particular theatre
I've not read much naval history before so feel free to suggest really obvious things

I'm also open to suggestion about books the deal with the interwar period or pre WW1 as long as there metal hulled - Dreadnaught also by Massie is already on my list
The only stipulation is that it has to be a normal sized paper back as I'm reading it on the bus to work

Oh and I'm UK based

Dystopian Wars / Confused about SAS attacks and carrier actions

Hi,

yes its me with more rules questions because I have no idea what I'm doing

So SAS
Lets say I have a unit of dive bombers that do a bombing run on an enemy ship
does the enemy ship get to shoot at the SAS with its AA like it would against rockets? And if so does this happen before the bombing run, at the same time or after?

similarly if its a dog fight do both sets of planes attack each other or does one group attack the other and there's nothing the over can do about it?

Also imagine I have 2 units of SAS with 4 token each, if both trays loose 2 tokens I will have 4 token in the grave yard
can I use a carrier with carrier action (4, 1x4) to create a new unit of SAS using these tokens or can I only do it when an existing tray has been destroyed?

if I can create the new unit can they activate when its my next activation?

Dystopian Wars / Height Band Rules questions

Hi,

I'm very new to DW and have a few rules questions around height bands

Subs
Some subs (like the Boston) come with a surface and submerged models but some don't - is there any reason for this or is it just to sell more pretty models?

Planes
So there are 3 flying height bands Surface flying, obscured and stratospheric
what limits which flight bands a flyer can be in - the Avion is classed as a "Small Aerial Low Level Flyer Model" does this mean it cant go up into the clouds?

hang on have I been doing something wrong, I thought to link fire weapons needed to be called the same thing so you can link broadside (s) with broadside (s) but you cant link fore turret (s) with broadside (s)

have I bee doing this wrong?

Hi,

I'm fairly new to DW (kind of, see my roll call post)

Anyway I'm half way through painting my FSA which of course means my thoughts are turning to my next fleet

I'm contemplating the French (mostly because the get floaty boats) but I'm not sure how they will play

so what is there play style like?

Roll Call / What a time to (re)start DW

Hi,

I played Dystopian wars when it first came out and found it a bit to fiddly (fuel on tiny flyers!)
shortly after the 1.1 book cam out me and my friend shelved our fleets and moved on

Now with 2.5 me are getting back into it friend A has dusted off his KoB and got some CoA, friend B has been gifted my old Prussians and has greatly expanded on them

And I have a shiny new FSA fleet which I'm painting as best I can

I'm now also thinking about my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fleets :p (French, Russian, maybe PLC - possibly not in this order)

hopefully the game will live again post Spartan

I've got my 2nd game of 2.5 on Monday and I'm hoping I'll get a carrier painted in time
