I have the Beta Test rules from Dream Pod 9 for the Jovian Chronicles. 

Has anyone else played this game?  Do you have any insight on it before I try to give it a whirl on the tabletop?

I have the PDF hanging out on my hard drive, along with a couple of their minis from the recent Kickstarter. The game first came to my attention when I wondered past the DP9 booth at Gencon a couple of years back. I haven’t gotten it anywhere near the table yet though!

 I'm curious myself. Locally we lost the distributor for DP9 while Heavy Gear was at it's height ( And during the whole RAFM debacle ) sp FLGS have been hard put to get anything in - I think one chain got in some Gear Krieg, about 5 years before the Wierd WW2 thing took off, but nothing for Jovian Chronicles at all.
 
 I have however admired their ships especially the big Confederation vessels. So, very interested to hear what it's like

A couple quick questions, I plan on using Paper templates to get started so does anyone know the respective base sizes for the capital ships.  The rules only say that the ships will come packaged with the proper base size.  The Squadrons are covered. -- Edit: I found it in the rules, right under where they talk abouteh Suadron base sizes.  Woops!

Also, is this significantly different than the Lightning Strikes game?

Not sure about the Lightning Strikes comparison, but I can help with base sizes. I got two large and one medium ship in their KS campaign. The medium base is 1.5”x3”, while the large one is 2”x4”. Here is a pic:

Thanks!  I looked further into the back of the Beta Rules and they had counters and bases for each of the ships/squadrons.  I put together a couple of lists from the Fleet Lists and plan on printing out a few of the tokens to give it a try. 

I am sure I will do it all wrong on the first couple of tries.

I got all the paper counters and templates for Exos, Fighters, and ships cut out and ready to go. 

I also watched a few Video Tutorials from the developer to help me understand some of the key concepts.
