Reference to the First Naval Wargames?
« on: June 20, 2018, 03:10:56 pm »
It is probably bad form to link to another foum, but some here may find this bit of research interesting:

The poster there is a Naval Armaments Historian, and has been digging around in the Admiralty archives.  There he uncovered some evidence of an early Admiralty sponsored miniature wargame.

Enjoy and add if you know more!

 Great find and fascinating reading.

Interestingly, on both sides of the Atlantic, there have been solid connections between science fiction and naval war gaming. The game system by naval architect and artist Fred T Jane, mentioned here? He also wrote the first science-based matter transmitter story "To Venus In Five Seconds ( Previous efforts used magical or wish-granting methods, while Jane's was pretty rigorous for the time ), among othe rtales which he also illustrated.

The system used in the US for games was developed by noted SF author, Baker Street Irregular and ACW Historian Fletcher Pratt sounds interesting to. From Wikipaedia - "Pratt was the inventor of a set of rules for naval wargaming, which he created before the Second World War. This was known as the "Fletcher Pratt Naval War Game" and it involved dozens of tiny wooden ships, built on a scale of one inch to 50 feet. These were spread over the floor of Pratt's apartment and their maneuvers were calculated via a complex mathematical formula. Noted author and artist Jack Coggins was a frequent participant in Pratt's Navy Game, and ( L Sprague ) de Camp met him through his wargaming group."

Sounds like a wet navy version of Attack Vector: Tactical :D
