Ruckdog's Random Spaceships!
« on: February 27, 2022, 03:10:15 pm »
Hi all! Here are some pics of some random ships, stations, and civilian craft that I've been painting up, mainly for use with A Billion Suns:

Looking sharp!  I recognize the gas barges and transports from Spartan, but where was the station from?
If my wife asks, I only spent half as much as I wanted to...

The station is also from Spartan, part of the later FSA line. It’s a Pallisade class battle station:

It came with three acrylic pieces that fit around each of the big guns up on top, but I thought it looked better without them so I left them off!

Thank you for the link... I never would have guessed Terran Alliance, but the only Planetary Defense Group I had any experience with was a Dindrenzi group I picked up for Halo Fleet Battles since those platforms had an aesthetic that fit in nicely with the UNSC designs.

Also, I think that leaving out the acrylics was the right choice.  Having those on the outside would have covered up a lot of your interior detailing and their being two dimensional flats would have required a lot more of painting freehand.

Another ship done! This one is kind of special as its the first of my 3D prints that I've actaully finished painting lol. It's a Emissary class carrier for the game Brave Sun, which I recently backed on KS.

I really like the color choices on this one, and the decals are a good touch, they must be tiny.

Is the stand printed as well as the ship, and if so, how does the stability seem?  I have not tried printing anything structural yet and still am using cut acrylic rods for everything.

Thanks!

The stand and stem are also 3D printed. Stability is pretty good; they use a "Twist-Lock" design to lock into place. The biggest concern I have is that the resin I used is pretty brittle; I'm worried that the stems will snap if twisted too hard or the model is dropped. I'm looking into alternate resins to use for printing stems with.

The company that made the game is selling the stls for the bases separately from the rest of the stuff, if you are interested:

I found Tenacious flexible resin from Siraya Tech to work pretty well as a mixture to add some elasticity to pieces, and the best illustration of the different proportions of mixes was these sails from Project Wargaming, link below...

Mixing Tenacious is basically a requirement for anything structural since it does have such a great amount of give, which is good because it is about three times the cost of the Anycubic I usually use.  The measuring and mixing does take a while to avoid bubbles, but a good 20-30% makes a real difference in the end result... my first flexible pieces went through a preschooler class test with my wife today and they survived with no snaps.

Nice.

I have been thinking about space and naval wargaming a lot lately.
