The Dragon
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:01:05 am »
Gentlemen, I present to you the Chinese Federation's Tian Long-class armored dragon robot. I completed this model for the July hobby challenge on the Gamer's Haven forums.

Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome. Thanks for looking!

Oh no! You Woke The Dragon  :o!

Seriously though, that model is epic, and your paint scheme more than does it justice! I love the way you did all the metallics and the jade scales; they have a great sense of depth to them, and it looks very balanced.

Damn Greg!  That is awesome!  That shade of green is perfect, contrasts very well with the gold.  It looks like it took you HOURS and HOURS to do.  And I love that the eyes are all Mecha-Godzilla red.  I looked for that specifically.

Thanks for sharing, can't wait to see it on a table.  Would enjoy a little tutorial/write up on what all you did.

Thanks for the kinds words all!

Mark, yes, it was many hours of work. I'd estimate 15-20 hours, spread out over a few weeks.

The green of the body is several shades from Master Series Painter. Forest Green for the base color, which took FOREVER to do--those scales are actually individual armor plates, and there are about a million of them. Plus, given how they're angled, it was easy to miss spots between/under the plates. Once that was done, I did a heavy drybrush of Grass Green, then a light drybrush of Jade Green (also both from MSP).

The underbelly--which you can't really see in these pictures--is GW's Tau Light Ochre, then a heavy wash of GW's Devlan Mud, then a medium drybrush of MSP's Orange Fire.

The metallic parts--head, spinal ridge, tail, arms, and the bases of the rockets--is flat black, heavy drybrush of GW's Balthasar Gold, and then a light/medium drybrush of P3's Rhulic Gold. On the arms and legs, I actually separated away the metal flash between the pistons (which I painted silver) and the main part of the arms, so they'd look more realistic. Given the "horns" and "whiskers" coming off the head, the easiest way to paint the head was to glue it on to the body. That meant, in order to keep from messing up the green paint on the body, I had to fully paint the back of the head and the "horns", then glue it on, then paint the rest of the head.

Glad you like the Mecha Godzilla Eyes! The metallics around the eyes, as well as the teeth, are P3's Radiant Platinum.

The red and orange for the structures on the dragon's back match the scheme of the hull and roof tiles of the rest of my Chinese fleet.

I'm thinking about doing another one in the colors of the Chinese Federation flag:

But...if I do, it'll be awhile before I give that a try. Plenty of other stuff that needs to be painted.

This looks awesome!!!
Really great work Greg. The greens that you used work perfectly for the model and contrast beautifully with the gold metallics.

Thanks all!

Dale...I think this is going to be one of those vessels that is dangerous until you kill it. It's designed for close-in attacks (hullbreaker, terrifying, etc). But I have a feeling it's going to be a fire magnet as it moves across the board. Not much chance to hide either--it's a large surface skimmer, so I'd have to screen it with a battleship or a carrier to protect it. I fully expect that it'll get killed quickly the first few times I run it.
