Tacticon 2016, Sept 1-4 Colo Spgs
« on: April 26, 2016, 02:46:28 pm »
So I got asked about running Spartan stuff for Tacticon this year, Sept 1-4 (Yep, Labor Day weekend). I have no other details as of yet, even on where it is other than down here somewhere.

My first consider was the usual: Firestorm Tourney. Then Add a DW Tourney, a Planetfall Tourney, and even a HALO tourney if enough folks would enter. Plus Demos in the side.
Or, if not enough for Tourneys, mega-battles is the next best option!

Who'd be interested in attending, and what would you like to see? Any day preferences for something specific?

A Halo mega-battle could be fun. Or even a couple of smaller Halo scenario-based games, maybe one each day. I'm talking about the Fleet Battles game, not Halo: Ground Command (which should be out by then, I would think). To be honest, I'm not real big on tournaments, so I think either a large Halo game or a few smaller scenario-driven games would be more fun. But that's just me, I know some people really like tournaments.

With the con being held in the Springs, I could attend on Friday afternoon and Saturday and Sunday, I think.

That would be awesome!

Here's my tenative event schedule:

Friday Daytime : Dystopian Wars Mega-Battle

Fri Evening : HALO Mega-Battle

Sat Daytime: Firestorm Tournament

Sun Daytime: Planetfall Tournament

Would that line-up interest folks?

I can't make anything on Friday during the day. Friday night Halo sounds good, though.

It's a con weekend, you're supposed to take off work! ;-)

I could move the DW battle to Saturday night, would that work?

Looking at my tentative rotation schedule I will likely miss Tacticon this year. I'm scheduled to travel up to Washington on Friday.
We will see.

Two Revised options:

#1 steers clear of bigger Saturday events, forcing less conflicts with the potential "big" games ala Warmachine, Guildball, 40K..

Friday Daytime : Planetfall Tournament

Fri Evening : Dystopian Wars Battle Scenario (More Martians?)

Sat Evening: HALO Battle Scenario

Sun Daytime: Firestorm Tournament

#2 asserts a Spartan presence in "prime time", hoping we'll grow into it.

Fri Evening : Dystopian Wars Battle Scenario (More Martians?)

Sat Daytime: Firestorm Tournament

Sat Evening: HALO Battle Scenario

Sunday Daytime : Planetfall Tournament

Thoughts?

After discussion with Rob at Gamer's Haven, I have Option #3

Fri Daytime: Firestorm Patrol Fleet Tournament or Battle Scenario

Fri Evening : Dystopian Wars Battle Scenario

Sat Evening: HALO Battle Scenario

Sunday Daytime : Planetfall Tournament

I'm leaning towards keeping Sat daytime open so folks can do more events.
If I drop from 4 to 3 events, I'll drop the HALO and do the Firestorm event on Sat evening. Or move HALO to Friday daytime.
We'll leverage any and all Tourney kits that Spartan has on offer.

I think Firestorm and Planetfall need to court the most local turnout, so I'll try to accommodate the most folks there.

I want to join in on the DW and PF tournaments, but Labor Day weekend is almost automatically booked for me.  If it frees up I will head down.

You'll be missed, Tod. That is the classic Tacticon Conundrum over Labor Day. (Similar to Valentines Day vs Genghis...)

Another opinion poll of sorts:

I'm thinking of making the Firestorm event a simple Patrol Fleet Tourney to ensure short rounds.
Should we go 600, 650, 700, or 799?
Should I model it on Ryjak's recent event?

Or punt and make it a mega-battle scenario as well?

I like the DW Friday evening option.  Rather than one big mega-battle, how about several smaller events?  Maybe one 4-player land battle scenario and another 4-person sea battle?  Maybe theme it as a "Giant Robot Smack Down!" for the land battle and a "Clash of the Dreadnoughts!" for the sea battle?  We'd only need 8 people total to sign up and a 2-on-2 battle will go much more quickly than a traditional mega-battle.

For Saturday, maybe consider Planetfall if we've got enough folks interested.

I'm hearing now that Sunday may be Guildball, which I want to do, and Saturday daytime would be Malifaux, which I'd also like to do :-)

Soooo... I'm leaning towards dropping the HALO event. Besides Greg and 1-2 others, I don't see the demand. (That said, if HALO is preferred over Firestorm, let me know!)

Here's the new and mostly final schedule, to be registered once I clear some heavy work days this week.

Friday daytime: PLANETFALL , 9 to 5
(Even at 2500 pts, we need a full 2hrs per round plus breaks)

Friday Evening: Dystopian Wars 6 til 11
-- I like the Land and Sea options, and I could easily run both. I'll play 2 Sea and 2 land tables.
-- Should I allow air elements to fly between tables? ;-)

Saturday: Firestorm Armada, Patrol Tourney, 5 - Midnight
- Leaning towards a 600 pt event ala what Ryjak is doing for NOVA

I'm also leaning towards a full painted requirement. Thoughts?

If you're leaning towards dropping the Halo event due to your desire to play Malifaux, then 1) shame on you  :D, and 2) I could run a Halo game on Saturday afternoon. I've got time to write up a stand-alone scenario for 4 players, and I can probably provide all the miniatures needed. It would be a one-off game, not a tournament, but I think that's OK. Also, if I ran it earlier in the day (maybe 11-3 or 12-4), people who wanted to do both Halo and Firestorm Armada would be able to play both.

However, I've not yet been approached by the folks at the Haven to run anything. Should I reach out to them?

Also, I could support the Friday evening Dystopian Wars event. I can provide more support for the sea table than the land table, but I do have the starter set for both the RoF and FSA land forces (plus enough aerial units for both to build up the force size).
