Project Jutland - The "5 Minute Fleet" & other stories.

Evening all,

Project Jutland continues a pace with my 4th batch of ships done, blog post has lots of pics of the new stuff.

There are two Helgoland Class along with the 6 Pre Dreadnoughts of the German High Seas Fleet plus some misc Light stuff.

I have taken the opportunity to work out progress so far and I am just over 50% complete on the Germans and 46% complete on the British . That's at 1 ship model per ship including Destroyers at 1/2400.

I did consider scaling back the Destroyers to 2:1 but thought what the hell, I may never get chance to do this again especially with this much space for the display, so let's do it properly !

I may try and take it to some shows next year, let me know if you have the space.

Regards Ken

Very good stuff Ken.

I've been trying to use the hundredth anniversary of WW1 to fill in the gaps in my knowledge of the conflict in general. Over the past couple of years, I've read several pretty good books on various aspects of the war (not just naval). Do you have any recommendations for books on Jutland? I know very little about the engagement, so even a broad-brush kind of book would work.

That would be awesome! Are you open to traveling to the States to do a show? Historicon in Fredericksburg, Virginia (normally held in July) might be a great venue for it. How much room do you need for the game? On a related note, I'm very curious about the rules set you are planning on using for the game. There are a lot of ships to control in the battle!

Oh, and if you have the time, I would be very grateful if you posted a few more pictures of your work in the Showcase for our members to enjoy.

Hi Landlubber,

Rather than read a book I would recommend watching this https://vimeo.com/162655850

It's a 25 minute animation of the Battle excellent stuff and a really good introduction.

Book wise there are probably too many too chose from, my go to book is Jutland an analysis of the fighting by John Campbell but I really wouldn't recommend it to any but the Uber geek, it's hard work but packed full of detail, ideal for a rule writer or someone who wants a 2 page description of a single hit !

Jonathan Sutherlands The Battle of Jutland 2007 is as good as any of the many books out there as is Jutland the German perspective by Tarrant. Angus Konstam has a new book out on the Battle, lots of good reviews but haven't read it myself yet.

Hi Ruckdog,

A trip to Historicon would not be out of the question, it's something I have always fancied doing and although the game space wise is massive the actual volume of stuff is not massive, it's possible.

Size wise for the table it's something we are still looking at, the 24 ship British Battle line is 15 ft long for a start ! Currently we are thinking about a central table 6ft wide (maximum reach for gamers) and at least 20 ft long with two further "manoeuvre" tables  maybe 4 ft wide at each side of the long ends with a walkway between them. Once the ships are done we will be looking at trying out some ideas at our club. My home table is 12 ft x 6ft so we are a bit limited on what we can try there.

Rules wise we have our own, still in the playtesting stage, once I'm happy with those as a general gaming set I will look at modifying them for the big one.

Very much concentrating on finishing the models before I worry too much about how we do it.

Regards Ken

Thanks for the book recommendations, will definitely check those out.

It's been a few years since I went to Historicon, but the last year I was there some of the guys re-created the Charge of the Light Brigade in 28mm...I think the table was 6 feet wide and about 30 feet long, or something like that, so I would think you'd probably be able to get the space you need for the game (might be a little late for this year though, as the con is in July). I don't know the Historicon organizers, but Ruckdog is right, that convention would be probably the best venue for that game in the U.S. (since it is primarily a historical wargaming convention).

Sounds neat! Now, I have to be honest, I haven't made it to Historicon myself yet (something I plan on correcting this year!), but my impression is that their venue has room for such events. I will look into what it takes to host an event there. I would also be willing to handle some of the logistics for you, since I live about 45 minutes away from Fredericksburg. Plenty of time to work out the details; I figure you will be targeting Historicon 2017.
