Naval Command: Modern Naval Wargame Rules
« on: August 17, 2016, 09:18:16 am »
After extensive feedback and playtesting my new modern naval rules “Naval Command” are now available on the Wargamevault.

http://www.wargamevault.com/product/190866/Naval-Command-Modern-Naval-Wargame-Rules?hot60=1&src=hgrs

“Naval Command is a set of wargame rules for recreating naval battles with fleets of miniature warships and aircraft in the age of the guided missile and jet aeroplane. Covering the period from the late 1950s to the modern day or near future.

The game can be played with fleets ranging in size form one or two ships per side to full sized battlegroups of ten or more ships. The rules can be used for different sizes of ships ranging from small fast attack craft up to super-carriers engaged in open sea battles or littoral and amphibious missions.

The aim of these rules is to create a game that captures the feel and provides a fairly accurate recreation of modern naval engagements but is still relatively quick to play with reasonably sized fleets and does not require excessive bookkeeping and paperwork.

The rulebook contains all the rules needed to play the game and fleet lists for a range of nations.”

Awesome! I have bought my copy ;). I also plan on mentioning this in the New Products segment of the next episode of the MBS podcast.

You can try. Something tells me that the next few times you and I game, it will be Halo Ground Command.  :P

@Rory, I'm not familiar with naval games set in the modern era. What do you recommend using for ships? Are there companies that make modern destroyers, carriers, etc or do you recommend using chits to represent the ships?

As usual, GHQ sets the gold standard when it comes to model quality:

There are also various modern classes of ships available on Shapeways, of varying degrees of quality.

In the counter department, a quick search found these:

And, of course Topside Minis has stated intentions to eventually develop and release modern ships for their lines. The CVs/CVNs are out, but it will probably be at least a year before we see much more since they are now turning to WWI.

Hi

Most of my modern miniatures are 1/3000 scale from skytrex and navwar. Very reasonably priced and easy to paint. Not sure about how easy it is to get hold of them in the US though.

Thanks for the heads-up! The Navwar website lists a shipping option to the US, so it looks like it wouldn't be too hard to order from there.

Navwar and Skytrex both have extensive ranges but are a bit lacking in really modern stuff (21st century) although I have scratch built a few modern ships, the stealth designs of modern ships are much easier to model.

I have also uploaded expanded fleet lists for the RN, USN and Russian Navy for Naval Command onto my site.
