MBS Monthly Poll #20
« on: January 15, 2018, 07:02:28 pm »
For this month's poll, we are asking all of you what your favorite Star Wars space combat scene is. Was it the intrepid attack led by Lando against the second Death Star? Was it the pitched battle between the Sepratist and Republic fleets above Coruscant? Or was it young Anakin blowing up the Droid Control ship at the end of Phantom Menace? ;)

Alternatively, if  your favorite space combat scene was from a Star Wars TV show/comic/book/video game, let us know that as well!

Well, yes, those set the standard for a long time. Probably until the larger Starfleet conflicts in later TNG and DS9, IMHO. :)

I picked Scarif for a couple reasons.  First, is the nostalgia effect from them using the original squadron leaders from Episode IV to bridge the timeline.  I also like that you can catch a glimpse of the Ghost.  Aside from that, I think it stood out because a) it didn't involve a Death Star; b) it didn't involve a 10 year old kid; c) the ion strike on the Star Destroyer followed by the Hammerhead ram (another ship from Rebels) was really nicely done; and d) having the escaping rebel ships smash into Vader's Star Destroyer when it popped in was a nice touch.

The final scene with Vader working his way through that rebel ship was also a favorite, but I don't count that as part of the "space battle".

Lastly, if I go outside Star Wars, you really can't beat B5.  Yes Greg, the CGI is really dated, but for the time they were really well done.  The below is a nice example.  It's a two-parter since I couldn't find the whole battle segment, including Ivanova's speech.

Part 1  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaSmassvv4w
Part 2, somebody redid the music, but the battle is pretty much intact.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk3ro-QEiBg

And then this is the Shadow Dancing battle.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAsk3ay3e98&list=PLwFTMUwVj2Szjoyl8f1mZ-AdofSibVhPf&index=7

I pretty much concur with everything that Stephan just said, right down to the 4 points and the B5 references.

I'd also add that the "shield" concept at Scarif was a nifty tactical challenge.

The only weakness I see in the battle is a recurring theme in Star Wars - you get FAR more effective results from crashing things into other things. So why don't they ever use mass drivers and railguns?

I'm also quite fond of several Deep Space Nine battles.

Another fun question would be "WORST Space Battle?"

I'd easily offer BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS

Also, let's face it, LAST STARFIGHTER is probably the worst space battle too, but also the best because of "Death Blossom".

The imperial guard ships at Scarif were woeful, taking ages to react. Obviously not a first line unit.

Endor still runs it a close second.

Oh I'm very fond of it too...but the actual space portions are objectively bad, and bad enough to make Battlestar "Only-5-SFX-Shots" Galactica look awesome in comparison.

I'll have to check that at home later...

Yes, Dale, but at least three of those SFX sequences were pretty cool.

I voted for the original Death Star trench run. It’s kinda hard to beat. It is just about the only scene from the newer version of the film that I like—some of the extra shots were great.

The battle over Scarif would be a close second, for the points Stephan mentioned, plus I love the perspective of some of those shots. Kind of “over the shoulder” from the pilots’ perspective.

I’ll watch the videos, Stephan, but they aren’t going to change my opinion. :P

I picked the Battle of Yavin, but I really liked the MF / Tie fighter battle in epd. 4 but that is probably pretty close to just a dog fight than a space battle.

Scarif for Star Wars. Endor probably second. I likes me some big ship battles...

B5 has lots of good ones.

Starblazers is full of awesome. What's not to like about battleships in space?

Wrath of Khan. That movie got me into Star Fleet Battles.

Coruscant...  Venetors duking it out with separatist warships, fighters zipping by on strafing runs, it was a total hoot for me, quite the wild ride!  Heck, I even love playing that stage in Lego Star Wars!

For non SW, Wrath of Khan and several of the B5 battles too, many of which are quite moving when taken in context of the stroyline, such as Gorash VII and the bombing of Narn, courtesy of Centauri mass drivers.  I'm a laser beam-kinda guy, but I did enjoy the new Battlestar Galactica Battlestar vs Basestar scenes.
