BFG campaign in VA?
« on: November 04, 2012, 04:55:47 pm »
Hey all,

I'm a bfg novice who would love to organize a BFG campaign in the central Virginia area. I think this system lends itself well to a story driven, fluffy campaign. This thread is just to gage interest in something like this. Given that I imagine we will all likely be spread out, I'm picturing monthly meetings with most of our correspondence taking place online. Feel free to email me! I game mostly a the Game Vault in Fredericksburg (Friday night FoW!).

I've fostered a lingering interest in BFG for several months now, downloading all the PDFs that I could find, and I even put together some paper models of Imperial ships.  But right now the only space ship models I have are Firestorm Armada models.  I'm interested in playing a campaign with a focus on developing a story, online as much (if not more) between games as on the tabletop.

But Andy is the true BFG fanatic.  He may even lend me ships to use so I won't be playing with proxies.

Indeed! In fact, I probably have some unbuilt and unpainted ships I could "loan" you if you'd rather paint them yourself ;).

The campaign system included with the BFG rules is pretty robust; we could probably use that as a starting point. If not, it wouldn't be too hard to make an X-cam setup using the missions included in the BFG "Blue Book."

Glad there's interest :) I've been looking at the BFG R lists, on the specialist games forum website (ill post a link when I have my computer in front of me later). Basically they are the lists revised by the rules committee and community but were never made official, they add in more fluffy options and fix some silliness. Are the campaign rules accessible online or do you need the hardback for that? Furthermore what fleets are y'all interested in? I'm thinking an Emperor's Children pleasure fleet or a rouge SM chapter (using the SM list but with chaos allies instead of imperial) for myself. I love the idea of doing a really story heavy campaign with developments online, I like the idea of being able to put together a comprehensive story arc worth of a Black Library series ;)

AFAIK the rule book campaign rules are part of the download off the GW site. As for lists, I'd probably run my IN; they are what I'm most familiar with and what I have the most stuff for!

I gave the campaign rules a read through, I thought they were quite good and flexible enough to allow for a bit of creativity. I'm fairly set on building a Chaos fleet, although I'm envisioning building renegade SM as well (perhaps the Chaos forces can attempt to corrupt a local SM chapter and add their strike cruisers and battle barges to their fleet roster depending on the course of the campaign). The points values for the battles seem to go anywhere from 750 to 2k which seems about right to me (I love that it changes from battle to battle, variety is good).

You're talking with the right guys, then.  I know almost nothing about the 40K universe & setting, but I enjoy writing naval battle reports, almost as much as Ruckdog loves putting those together.  :)  Most tabletop gamers like to talk about how they split their hobby time and table gaming time, but I split mine into thirds:  painting, playing, and writing about playing.  If you don't mind me using paper model ships or even some models from another range (I'm working on a Sorylian fleet right now--long, cylindrical ship models, approximating the size and shape of Imperial ships), then I'm definitely in!

I definitely don't mind, the FA range of ships is pretty nice and according to the fluff every imperial ship looks different depending on where it was built anyway, so it makes no difference to me :) so I guess that makes for one Chaos and two Imperial fleets so far

Well, we will have one Imperial Fleet in the Fredericksburg area and the second a little farther away in the southeastern sector of the state.  We can set up a board on the forum here with threads for individual fleets, and we can always post proper battle reports with pictures on the blog.

All right, time for me to dive back into reading those setting document PDFs and get some ships painted!

I took the liberty to create a new board in the community section, just below the DWVA board:

Time for me to do some reading!
