Star Trek: Attack Wing
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:52:50 pm »
Saw this on TGN today/

http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/2013/03/11/70984/

Apparently, it is a Star Trek themed version of FFG's X-wing game. I'm curious, to say the least! The only thing is, I'm concerned that the X-Wing rules won't give a proper feel to an engagement between two Star Trek capital ships. Oh well, it can't be any worse than the Heroclix game!

Meh.  Never really got into the large-ship combat of Star Trek.

Now, what I would REALLY like to see is a Battlestar Galactica-themed fighter combat game similar to the X-wing game.  I can always hope....

Well, if this does well, FFG might just make a BSG version of the game. They already have the license, after all!

That would be cool.  They don't have quite the range of different ships that the X-wing game has, but I'd still get into it.  Although they could do several versions of the Raptors and Heavy Raiders--missile boats, gunships, etc.

That could be interesting. It would also bee fun if it were a capital scale game, Battlestars vs Base Stars!

Back to the Star Trek game, one thing that occurs to me is that Wizkids is going to have to step up their game a bit on the miniatures front; part of the appeal of X-wing is how the minis were exhaustively researched, accurately decorated, and correctly scaled to each other. Right now, the Heroclix minis just aren't up to that standard. I don't hold out much hope for re-sculpts, but hopefully the paint jobs will at least get upgraded!

The ONLY reason I'm interested in this is because my wife is a big Star Trek fan, and I think she would really enjoy playing X-Wing Fighter... if it wasn't Star Wars!  She will play all variety of games, but she says my tabletop naval games are too boring.  Star Trek model ships will definitely get her attention (even if they're painted so-so), and it's not the standard Heroclix system which I never bought into playing.

Unfortunately, it looks like they're sticking with their collectible model plan--I really like how FF has marketed the Star Wars system so you can buy the ships you really want to add to your game!

Well, I'm a huge Trekkie, so for me this has a huge appeal on its own ;). That being said, I was less than enthralled with the Heroclix rules and the ham-handed way they applied them to the Trek license.

This I wonder about, honestly. Granted, the press release describes the minis as "collectible," but I'm not sure if this means the game will be a full-on CMG or not. Given the way this system requires a lot of supporting material (dials, cards, markers, etc) for each additional ship, I'm not sure Wizkids could get away with the CMG model on this one. It is hard to picture a game that features $15 single-ship random boosters being a big success! That being said, it does look like they have found a way to get me to buy the same minis 3 times (Fleet Captains, Heroclix, and now this).

BUMP!

I just got the base set as a belated Christmas present. It is really neat! Just like X-wing, there is an impressive amount of stuff in the box. Anyone else get this one yet?

Recently got into this and have played a few games.  Even managed to get my son to play, and he had fun with it!

The one thing that held me off was the mini quality.  Not bad, but not even close to the quality of X-Wing.  They are, in fact, the same reused molds from Star Trek: Tactics Heroclix, and Star Trek Fleet Captains.  Just different paint jobs.

Board Game Geek seems to be the "official hub" of the game, had some interesting discussions there.  One thing I'm not a fan of is the competitive play prizes... several cool ships are ONLY available as prizes for sequential play events (unless you want to pay $80 for them on eBay). :(

But that said it's a fun game, and I've got one of each of the ships now, so far. :)

Yeah, I was noticing the same thing about the cool "prize only" ships they were offering. I think it is just killing Wizkids that this game is not a full-fleged CMG like Heroclix ;). Hopefully they will re-release some of the specials as normal ships in the future.

I hear you on the sculpts...that is still a major differentiator for X-Wing; FF has focused on making super high quality minis for their game. The ST ones aren't bad, but they are definitely a cut below. That being said, between Fleet Captains, Heroclix, and now Attack Wing, Wizkids has successfully figured out how to make me buy at least a few of these sculpts 3 times  :o!

Does the game play so differently from X-Wing?  I like how X-Wing is largely a game of maneuver, but from my limited exposure to Star Trek, the space combat in that setting is mostly large ships relatively motionless in space just zapping each other and maintaining power to their shields.  I really like the sense of asteroid dodging and dogfighting in X-Wing, but I'm wondering how that is going to work with the capital ships coming up in the next wave, and it doesn't seem to fit the Star Trek theme as much--I'm wondering if they revamped the system to put more emphasis on allocating power to shields or weapons, etc.

Not really sure...I've only played the quick-start rules for both so far. Someone like Brigman who has played both a little more than I have would be better equipped to say.

Check this out! There will be an enoumous Borg cube in the game, 8" on a side.

That is pretty awesome! Not sure if it is $100 worth of awesome, though...

Well...at first glance, at least it looks more in scale with the other ships in the game.  Have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of this game, and one of my biggest complaints is the scale.  There's no way a Klingon Bird of Prey should be as big as the 1701-D.

But, it IS wildly popular at my FLGS, more so than X-Wing, I think.

I have a similar aesthetic complaint.  I'm also not thrilled with the fact that the game rewards you for using lots of different ships so that you can get the unique abilities.   Having a fleet where every single ship is a unique and different design just seems wrong.  Different ships for different roles, yes, but every single ship a different design?!?  I want my B5 fleet of Omega cruisers!
